964 oil pump

Can someone tell me whether or not a 964 oil pump will fit in a 3.2/930 case and is it fuctionally the same.
Based on what I've learned it's a substantial improvement over the Carrera pump which itself was highly regarded until the 964 came along, correct?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Yes, the 964 pump will fit and is a nice upgrade.
Many people are bypassing the 964 pump in favor of the 996tt pump or the GT3 pump but all things considered the 964 pump is up to the task.
At one time I thought the 964 pump was an inferior choice because we saw a few cracked housings but that phenomenon was I believe an anomaly.

Unless I misunderstand the 964 pump's dimensions, you do need to relieve the case somewhat in order to get it to fit. And you need to purchase the 930/964 shorter splined connecting tube.
Both to accommodate its greater length. At least that is what was needed to use the 930 pump and the GT3 pump in my motors, and my understanding is that the 964 pump has similar dimensions.

Not a big deal. I clearanced the case with a hack saw and then die grinder, and it is just one rib pair you have to deal with, if memory serves.

I bought my GT3 pump a couple of years ago, at a time when it actually cost less than a 964 pump (both new prices). But the economics of that may well have changed.

Pretty amazing, when you come to think of it: the mounting bolts and case passages are the same for the GT3 part as they are for the earliest engines in 1965. Then again the transmission/engine bolt pattern is the same as the 356 and its VW predecessors.

mcfoo, I hope you don't mind me jumping in a bit...I am also thinking of going to an upgraded pump for my 3.2

What are the part numbers to look for (964 vs 996TT vs GT3) and also what are ball park prices for each? I have seen the GT3 used go for $700 on this website, but I think I prefer to purchase new on something so critical.

Thanks
