Is this crankcase damage terminal?
Hello all,
After shopping around for an early 911 restoration project for some time, I just acquired a 1970 T with a good body, and a largely complete, though out and mostly disassembled engine. In going through the engine parts, and trying to figure out what will be needed for rebuild, I was most alarmed to find that the right timing chain had been rubbing the crankcase and wore a deep groove in it (apparently the right cam sprocket was spaced too far forward?) I have two questions for anyone who might comment. 1. Is this damage fixable, or should this be chucked? and 2. The seller has what he claims is a 1970 E crankcase that he will throw in, since he wasn't aware of this - am I right in assuming that everything else (crank, intermediate shaft, etc..) will swap right in? I haven't read anything to the contrary as far as I can tell. So the two pictures below are inside and outside views of the timing chain passage on the front of the right case half. The groove was worn above the upper chain ramp, and where it exits into the chain housing nearly wore into the upper stud. I appreciate any comments and advice. ![]() ![]() Michael Caterino Santa Barbara, CA mcaterino@sbnature2.org |

Its fixable, if you need to retain that case.
![]() ![]() Its simply needs some welding, some hand work, and then some finish machining on the gasket surfaces.

Thanks Steve. I should have mentioned that it is the car's original motor, so there is some incentive to retain it if possible. Glad to know it'll be possible.
