oil in case

Does anyone know how much oil should be in the case of a 911sc when sitting cold. I left the oil tank plug in.Five quarts come out of the case and no more. I,m trying to figure out where the giant cloud of oil is coming from on start up. Plugs have oil on them.Leak down is good ,no smoke while driving and none going down hill off the throttle and then back on it. Seems like an awful lot of oil in the case,wonder if it could sitting up in the bottom of the cylinders.

Oil on plugs sounds like worn valve guides. The oil is seeping past the guides/seals around the valves while sitting. It accumulates in the lowest part of the cylinder.

5 quarts does not sound like too much. Out of the ~9 quarts (or 11 quarts with a front mount oil cooler), most can accumulate in the sump if it sits long.

How much was in the oil tank? If you add the two volumes and come up short, the rest may be in your cylinders and heat exchangers.

I do not think 5 quarts would be enough to leak past bad rings from the crankcase side.

rbutts....The next time your getting back home after a good drive, try and let the engine idle for a few minutes so the pump can scavenge the oil from the crankcase back to the oil tank. Then the next time you start up when cold, check and see if it smokes less.
