Cam Shim Question

I am putting the cams back together on my 88 3.2 and noticed that Wayne's book says typically 3 shims on the left and 4 on the right. I took mine out and kept them separate but I have 4 on the left and 3 on the right...does this make sense. I don't think I got them backwards when I put them in baggies for storage. I am trying to avoid having to measure anything since all I am doing is reinstalling them and all the parts were in extremely good condition.
Possibly a stupid question...when I think of "left" side I'm thinking of the DRIVER's side but since 911 engines are "backwards" so to speak, am I getting this wrong? I've seen articles refer to the front of the engine and mean different things, depending on author.
Thanks
