help ! new rebuild locked up !!
Ok here's the story :
I had my motor rebuilt by a Porsche mechanic and the process was a nightmare, I ended up taking the car back before it was a running car. The wiring was the only thing left to do. I am not a mechanic but did do my research before the rebuild and bit the bullet and paid for the recommended upgrades (new style tensioner etc..) after figuring out the wiring and consulting Wayne's how to rebuild P engines book took all the necessary precautions before starting the motor and to my delight it roared to life and sounded awesome ! Filled with optimism I then connected the clutch cable and linkage etc, then put the car in reverse and backed it out of the garage and the engine died and then to my horror started making an terrible knocking sound. *sigh* So after eliminating every obvious possibility I reluctantly pulled the motor to try and determine the source of the noise. I stopped when I removed the chain tensioner covers and noticed the metal shavings and the following problem that's pointed out in the picture I'm going to attach to this post. My question is (and I don't even know if it's possible to tell from just the photo) is this the primary problem or a secondary problem cause by something more dramatic and deeper in engine. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance from a depressed long hood guy in Springfield MO ![]() sorry the car details are 70 911T , origional 2.2 liter motor w/ Weber's. |

Isn't that open "cup" supposed to be pointing UP???!!! Or am I not looking at the right thing? IIRC the open cup is supposed to allow oil to collect and keep the sprocket lubricated, or something like that. More knowledgeable people will be able to help you better I'm sure. Sorry for your problem...that truly sucks but it looks like you have got good evidence of a screw up on their part.

abit off center

Looks like the whole shaft got to spinning. I wonder if the snap ring came off or was not put on which would let the shaft work out and start spinning? or it was installed so no oil was getting in there and just tore out the shaft from the arm? Normally without oil it will just take out the bronze sprocket bushing. Did you clean the oil out of that area before the picture or was it that dry when you took it apart?

The shaft looks off-center. IF you want the mechanic that did the rebuild to honor any warranty you will want to stop here and involve them. BTW - You have already proven you could have done the rebuild yourself!
The next step is to pull the tensioner and examine the parts. Maintain cam timing but I would not trust it on reassembly. The misalignment here, whatever the cause is determined to be, may very well be the primary cause of your unsettling noise. Good luck.

Less brakes, more gas!

That shaft looks wayyyy off center to me as well... also, if you found shavings piled at the bottom of the chain case you may be in for a complete teardown and clean... Would not want metal bits running around the oiling system.
Show us a pic of the other side. Best regards, Michael

Snap-Ring must have come off the back of the shaft. Thats the only way the locating pin on the front of the shaft can move that far forward to allow it not sit in the grove.
But I am a little amazed that in that short of time "start engine, idle and then back out of garage" the shaft bore is so worn out that it's off center. The shaft must have started spinning right from start.

Was there even a bushing in there??? It looks even more off center than that would allow.

don't make the mistake i did.you must clean out the complete oiling sys, tank, coolers, and lines.you lost a lot of metal.i did not clean out my oil tank i cleaned everything else but the tank.for other reasons i pulled my motor split the case all the bearings were badly scored the crank and inter shaft had to be re polished and bearings replaced.note:i only ran the motor about 10miles: all it takes is one little piece of metal between the crank and bearing.so when you think its clean clean it again.
