Can you tell the difference between E Camshafts
I just had my 2.2L motor rebuilt. It started out as a 2.2T, but I have installed S pistons and E camshafts. I thought all E camshafts were the same...I now learn that there are two different types of E cams.
My question is...how can you tell the difference between the two types of E cams Here are the left and right numbers on my cams. 901 105 181 00 901 105 110 05 I would have thought that the above numbers should indicate early E cams. How can you tell?? Thanks K |

I believe there is only one E profile? There are MFI cams and non-MFI but they have the same profile. The numbers you have listed are correct for E cams. What you may have heard is that not all cams with these casting numbers have E profiles. It's possible that some of the early L or Solex cams use the same cores - I would need to check the books.

Well I believe there is only one "E" profile and there were no non MFI "Es" build by the factory. There has been an on going question about "E" vs Solex cam profiles over the years but all of that none sense stems from a misprint in a factory spec book some 30 years ago.
Long story short "E" cam is an "E" cam and the Solex is not. There is some conjecture that the "L" cam may have had an "E" profile but that is yet to me confirmed. [confirmed John - camgrinder]

Sorry... it was too early in the morning to be replying to posts. Henry is absolutely right. There are no non-MFI E cams. I have non-MFI E profile cams in my 2.2 engine but they didn't come that way from the factory.

I was reading Excellence Magazine (latest issue) last night and someone pointed out that there were early E cams and later E cam. What caught my attention was that the there were different specs (significant) on the two cams. I then checked Bruce Andersons book to see what was listed.
As it turns out according to the material...there are two specs for E cams. One set of E cams are like the L Cams. The other 1972 and 1973 E cams are not as aggressive as the 1969 to 71 E Cams. Your input is greatly appreciated. K |

Bruce Anderson's book is a great source for some information but is wrong on this and many other points.

In the spec book the 69, 70 - 71 and 72 - 73 are all different but the same casting numbers. The difference between the 2.2 and 2.4 E cams may be due to the different intake valve lifts. Not sure about the 2.0 and 2.2 though. Maybe a typo?
