Spun Rod bearing damage

I purchased a used 83SC with a possible spun rod bearing due to oil starvation. Anyone care to offer their experience on the potential damage I may encounter. I have heard the price of undersized bearings is quite steep. I purchased to whole car for the value of the core long block/915 and I am excited about having a spare 3.0 to rebuild own my own with out a time line or pressure. Thanks for your time and input.

Maybe a stupid question but if only one rod bearing is "spun" do they all need to be ground down to the next size?

I am just rebuilding my engine that spun a rod bearing. That took about 170 microns off the rod journal, making my crankshaft junk. When you consider the cost of grinding one size under, hardening and buying undersized bearings, you are better off buying a good used std/std crankshaft. I also got another set of pistons and cylinders because there were deep scratches from the bits of metal that came off the bearing. So far, I spent $1450 on used parts, and I got really good deals...Then I have to buy all the seals and bearings. About another grand. If the head got damaged from contact with piston, there will,be some machine shop work to be done. The rods may need to be reconditioned too.

Don't forget to inspect your oil system (coolers, hoses) for metal debris. Would be potentially detrimental to your new rebuild.

I also had spun a bearing.... allbeit, two rod bearings #2, and #5.

There is another solution to your problem. You may not want to go this route, but it is a route none the less...... You can send your crank off the JB Racing in Florida. They will send it off to CCR (custom Crankshaft Repair), and have all of the rod journals offset ground, and turned down to utilize the Clevite 2" Nascar Chevy bearing. This will also "stroke" your crank, adding to your displacement and torque.... You then need to source new rods and that is where JB Racing comes in. They work with Pauter rods and can put together a package that will work for you....
I also had the oil mod done to the crank as well... I will NEVER have the dreaded #2 and #5 oil starvation problem again!!!

This is what I had done, amoung other things, and it truely was a package deal. With the above mods, you will have a bullet proof engine...

Hey Turbobrat930.... What did they charge for that service? I have a spare crank needing one journal fattened up.

I do not know what they would charge... As mine was offset ground (one side of the journal stayed the same, while they only took material off of the other) causing a smaller journal, and a longer stroke in the process....

I do know that Armundo is the "go to" guy when it comes to these damaged cranks. From what I was told, sometimes he is pain to deal with as far as the time he actually has the crank (weeks, if not months before its done). I had JB Racing ( Mike Bruns) handle all of my machine work, and they sent the crank to him... It was back at JB Racing within 3 weeks or so....

Give Mike a call at JB Racing or a PM on here MBruns.... I am sure they will be more than happy to help you...

Be sure to get some clarification on what the claimed condition of the engine is. Because a spun rod bearing can lead to a lot of the internals being junk. Here's how I know (post #13 being the most telling):

Engine Bearing Failure- Disassemble Heads Too?
