2.2 to 2.4 mfi in a 71t coupe query

Hi to all.

I have just purchsed after a long hunt what I consider to be a fine and very sound original 911 71t coupe in conda green - the green with the gold porsche script did it for me.

The car came with its original 2.2 engine that has suffered from a timing chain tennsioner failure - on closer inspection with the engine out and vavle covers off one rocker arm is broken leaving me to belive that a vavle has met a piston - so on and so forth.

I intend on keeping this engine for a future rebuild. (nice to have matching no's)

So mean time, I have a 69k clean and original 2.4mfi engine that came out of a crashed 72 targa - the car has been stored for 19 years since its untimely crash at the hands of the local mechanics apprentice! (he borrowed the keys from the office on a quiet Sunday and proceeded to wreck it )

As I am new to 911's I would very much like the wisdom of those of you out there who have not only my enthusiasm but also an in depth mechanical knowledge of these amazing cars.

What I would like to know is if there are any major issues I am going to run into when I fit the 2.4mfi to my 71 coupe - I am guessing that I may have to alter the fuel lines but that is just a guess! - what horrors await me?

I have all the parts from the wrecked targa as I bought the whole car for parts.

(I have ordered both of Wayne Dempsey's books to be going on with)

I also have a 2nd 2.2 carb engine that came with the coupe that I know nothing of - it is alleged to run but has not done so for some time. it was bought to replace the broken original 2.2 but never fitted.

Any thoughts or opinion are welcomed....

The attached picture was taken at point of purchse.

many thanks Tom

You'll have to add a fuel return line in the tunnel, the MFI fuel filter console, return fitting in fuel tank, fuel pump and misc fuel lines. Off the top of my head I think that is it. Almost a plug and play.

Conda green is one of my favorite colors. Good choice!

Hi BK911

Thank you for your thoughts.

Is tunnel access straight forward - ? I can picture the cables/linkage/lines passing in at the engine end but I cannot picture the exit at the front end -

Regards Tom

Once you remove the engine it's pretty straight forward. Just slide it in from the rear. I used a brake line from the FLAPS. (Friendly local auto parts store)

Go to the main forum and do a search. Not really sure what to search for, maybe "adding fuel line" or something, but this topic has been covered and there are a couple of really good threads already. Get real familar with the search function. There is a LOT of good info out there already on just about everything you can imagine.

Also, we can never have too many pictures of a conda green coupe!

Here's one to get you started. I searched for "fuel line". Lots of info came up.

Should I replace theses brake and fuel lines?

BK911 - thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

I dont think that I have even scraped the surface of the information burried deep in the threads here at Pelican.

Its a new subject for me so - lots to take in and remember.

I am thrilled with the car I have bought - I had decided it was going to be viper green/conda green or gemini blue.

should you be looking for any targa parts I have a multitude of bits left from the parts car I bought for the engine.

regards tom

Now you've done it. Expect to get a bunch of emails from lots of people. Start taking the parts car apart and listing stuff for sale in the classifieds section. You can probably recoup most of your money!

And just because there is a search function, don't be afraid to ask questions. Gives people something to talk about while at work. Everybody LOVE pictures!
