Parts cleaning
My 2.4 911 E engine is in a zillion pieces in my garage. Parts should be arriving soon and the re-assembly process to begin. I am replacing a piston, all rings, heads rebuilt, chains, ramps etc. Just not splitting the case.
The pics I see of others doing similar rebuilds all look pristine. Mine is nearly as grimy as when I took it apart. For the shade tree mechanic, what is the recommended method, products and tools for cleaning parts both big and small. Many Thanks! Chris 73 911 E |

I would say, bar none, use just plain ole mineral spirits.... take a look at my rebuild post... of cousre, I hand polished mine...but it started by just using mineral spirits.. followed by a wash in dawn detergent and water.... dryed throughly after that... then a light coat of assy lube on the bearing surfaces, etc....

home depot, lowes, and hardware store.... I live kinda close to a distribution center for an oil company.. I drove over there and brought with me a 5 gallon container.... it was about $2.50 a gallon... very cheap.... it will be close to $10 bucks a gallon at any of the above places..... but you wont use much more than that.. I was filling up my 30 gallon parts cleaning tank, so I bought more....

turbobrat930, I live in Atlanta and have been paying $6.00 per gallon from the paint store. Where did you find MS for $2.50? I would like to know for the next time I have to drain my parts cleaner.

Here I am again with my WD-40 (No I do not sell this product).
![]() WD-40 is an amazing cleaner on serious oil build-up. It seems to blend with the existing oil on your parts and allows you to easily rub it off with a simple shop towel. Very little scrubbing compared to the other stuff I tried. Eric J.
