8 broken head studs.. record?

Hi,

I've just started to strip down my 3.0sc motor this afternoon. It has been sat for 3 years since I took it out of the car, while I've been race-prepping the chassis / starting a new business / every other job except working on the car.

The final count for broken head studs is 8. I have 7 here to prove, but one must have rattled down the road at some point. All were in the exhaust side. I just wandered if this is some sort of record, for a car that I had running just before the engine was removed.

I did drive the car (a 1974 chassis coupe) around 3 miles after buying and before I began tearing it apart, but the seized brakes didn't allow me to see if it was down on power. I was also a little pre-occupied with the gear shift that could only find 2nd gear, the holes in the rotten floor and a strong smell of petrol.

All comments are welcome, espeically if you can beat my head-stud record or if you bought a worse starting point for a project than mine.

Mike

Most of them probably broke when it was out of the car, thats why you didnt notice any fault
Tongue in cheek

sounds like you used a gear puller to remove the heads!

I helped strip an engine down last week. All of the lower head studs were broken. This car sat for about 20 years but only has 33,000 miles on it. Seems the corrosion that occurs with sitting could be key. They all broke in the same spot by the way. 3.0 liter also BTW

that's the record then! My tally went up to 9 studs in total, when I came to taking the heads off and found another loose one.

It's almost comical when reading 'horror stories' of people finding one broken head stud

Im pretty sure i have about 8 broken right now and the car is still pulling strong! haha Im in search of an engine to rebuild and make the swap. Im pretty sure the heads have welded theirselves to the block. The car runs great but i know its coming..
