Latest Supertec magic

The engine posted here is a 4 liter normally aspirated project for a SoCal dune buggy .
The engine spec are 76.4 mm stroke and 105 mm bore or 3970cc. The base engine was a 964 3.6. The crank is a GT3 race crank. It has been cross drill for improved rod bearing oiling. The oil pump is also GT3. Case has been shuffle pinned and Supertec head studs were installed. All bearings are Dow dry film moly coated. The pistons and cylinders are custom made for us by Charles @ LN Engineering 11:1 compression ratio www.lnengineering.com . These are really nice pieces. The rods are generation one (127.8mm) GT3 Titanium Pankls. We change the rod bolts to ARP to ensure long life of the engine. The heads were Supertec VentiPort 38/40, twin plug 964 based. Berillium intake seats were added to accomodate the Del West titanium valves and Supertec valve springs and Aasco titanium retainers were fitted. The cams are from John Dougherty DC 40 w 108 lobe center www.drcamshafts.com . The intake system is a modified 3.2 Carrera manifold with a Ford throttle body and operating with a Clewett Engineering / Electromotive engine management www.clewett.com. The flywheel and dual disc clutch package are custom built by Kennedy Engineering to suit the Mendiola sequential MK 6 transmission. www.kennedyeng.com

no offense to any that contributed to the engineering or build here, but, how long will that "hummer" last before it spins a bearing or breaks a wrist pin or cooks something ? (I hope you say it is a race motor from the dunebuggy reference i.e. live 30 hrs... so I don'tr want to build one and go broke in the process !! :-)
Man that is one wicked, and I mean wicked... attractive set up !!!!!!!!!

More magic

Note the two different color spots on the crank. These a size designations. The bearings come in three sizes and you match the bearing to the crank via the color code. That's right this engine took two sets of bearings for proper fitment.
The serpentine belt system is also a product of Clewett Engineering.

No offense taken. It's a great question.
The engine is designed to run at relatively low rpm. The first version of the engine made maximum horse power at 6800. It's first life was over 100 hr. The second rebuild lasted about 25 hr. It lost a rod after being run in a inverted position. It seems the customer put his buggy on it's lid.
This engine is designed to make maximum HP at 7200. With these enhanced components and a red line of 7200 I would guess this engine will get a freshen up at 100 hr.
The GT3 engine that shares many of these major components will generally have a service life of 50-75 hr. and that engine spins at 9200+.
The biggest problem we face with this type of application is contamination from sand. It gets in everywhere.

Henry - very nice setup...

Not trying to cause any offence - just have never seen a set of those GT3 rods before, and had a vision in my head of how they "should" look.

Are the Ti Pankl rods always that roughly finished ? Die parting lines, forge flash and grind marks everywhere ? No polish and shot peen ? Nowhere near as pretty as those studs !!

tweaks what made you figure that motor would require 'freshening' in terms of hrs vs 100k's of miles?

Henry what makes a motor an 'hours' motor vs. a '200k mile' motor?

Sorry for the dumb questions.

This one is not a dumb question.
Airtime and sand On the street it could very well last 100K+. Like any high performance machine, the harder you drive it , the sorter the life. Ever seen a 50 year old hooker?

If you magnify anything enough it tends to look a little rough. But to answer your question, they all look petty much the same. You can't grind on them without replating them so we use them as they come. I'll tell you what, they seem to have a very low failure rate.
And the price is right.
cheers

Thanks for the explaination Henry (and I don't doubt the longevity or failure rates) - can you elaborate on the factory "plating" on the Ti rods ? Is this Tiduran ?

Years ago there was a So. Cal. guy that put a 900 hp Nissan (NPTI) GTP engine in a sand rail. The buggy was called Mega Bucks and the name fit the project.

Now adays you see buggies with budgets well into the 6 figures. Just the Mendiola transmission will set you back $25K+.

I don't know what it is but I would bet on a product like Casidium. (DLC)

Henry - that is positively drool-worthy...

Without sounding like a complete social clod, roughly what kind of HP/ torque does it throw down? Holy cow 4.0?!!

Or do you just measure this one in pounds of thrust!

I'm glad to hear that my humor is not lost on everyone. There are some on this forum that take offense to my honest and sometimes edgy approach to communication. Recently an entire thread was removed because a couple of people couldn't see the humor in one or more of my posts. Some posts have even been labeled "unprofessional" by people who believe that professionalism is a allusion to be manipulated not a reflection of performance. I wonder how my customers feel about my sense of humor as it pertains to our performance? This forum is filled will men being men and the ease at which some people take offense is simply astounding.
If you guys keep laughing, I'll keep posting. Hey, you know what, I'll keep posting even if the stodgy curmudgeons don't get it. who knows? I might even throw in a little information backed by 30 years of experience.
Cheers
