I am going to be installing my hydraulic tensioners. How do I remove the "930..." types currently installed? I know about keeping the tension on the chains and all the details. What I need to know is how to compress these?

HI ahdoman
Just pull the tensioner off the shaft, and hold the bottom of the idler with the engine on TDC, the cam gear is on the wrong way round!!! if that is your engine, and are you selling the old tensioners and case covers??. regards mike

Thanks Mike. The parts are going into another "backup" engine. How can you tell the cam gear is on backwards?

Thanks for the heads up Mike. I didn't rebuild this engine. I was just swapping out to the Carrera tensioners. I'm glad you caught that. So this is the side I want out?...

I would check the other side also because I can assure you that the chains were not measured for chain alignment with the center case intermediate shaft..there is no way what is there is properly measured and built

Bruce - I checked the other side and it is correct. This is a well running 77 2.7CIS. I am preping it to install it into my 914/6. It is curently torn down to the long block but since I have to re-orient the cam gear I will go ahead and check everything else tied to the timing.
How do you measure for the chain alignment with everything assembled? I have used Wayne's rebuild book and I don't recall him discussing that. I am curious to take the cam gear off and see if maybe it has a spacer under it because the chain and gear isn't worn strange. |

It's the chain that I would expect to have suffered, not so much the gear.
