1968 porsche 911 engine swap/rebuild
Hi, this is my first posts on here, recently inherited (mid last year) my uncles 1968 porsche 911 s with a SKT Mega III kit on it, pearl black, you can just sit there admiring it all day before you realise it actually drives, what the 911 is, the history, the passion, the feeling that every owner got when they first drove it, and still gets.
Now to my question, my engine is 170+k's and having troubles with it, and now i am thinking about swapping the engine out, want to stay with the porsche engines, just wondering if it can be done and what model engines it can be done with, if possible and what needs to be upgraded besides from the newer engine that would be going in ie, transmission and so on, with the engine doesnt matter which one, any air cooled one basically from 1972 onwards, sure the newer it could be would be good but 72 onwards will do. First, welcome to the board.
The 911 chassis is capable of holding any 911 based engine. The real question you need to ask yourself is "what is my budget?" If your car looks like the car in this picture it deserves a very nice engine. I would suggest a 3.0 SC or a 3.2 Carrera engine with a 915 trans. The easiest engine and trans combinations for an early chassis. ![]() ![]()

Is it really a 1968 911S. That's a rare car and I am sure you will get a lot of opinions regarding originality vs. customization (engine, body, etc.). The most important thing is to keep the original engine and tranny with the car - there is serious value in matching numbers.
Henry could advise you on numerous tantalizing possibilites if you choose to rebuild your original motor. Another pic: ![]() An original '68S for comparison:

hi, thanks for the replies, i would like to say that my car looks similar to both first pictures that you each posted (take away the targa top though), upon seeing the origional 68 picture i am begining to feel that my car may not be an 68 unless body could change that much, will have to check with uncle, could have been mixed up in translation as he only speaks little english.
"The 911 chassis is capable of holding any 911 based engine" that was very pleasing to here as i live in australia and have been told the older engine parts are harder to come by, even when buying from overseas (still alot of work), but there are a few for the later engines. will try and post pictures up later if i can find cable |

I think the red car is a 1967. USA 1968 models should have the side marker lights, no?
My car was converted from a 1971 911S to a 911RS IROC look. It has a 2.7 RS spec motor. Cars can be converted either way. The front bulkhead needs to be changed between the short/long hoods.(latch is in different place- TRE Motorsport makes long hoods that fit the short hood bracket, though) The fenders also need to be changed. And, of course, you need the hood itself. Front spoiler presents many options. My panels are all fiberglass. Here is an original early 911S ![]() Here is my 1971 911S ![]()

Post the chassis number (found on the aluminium ID plate and
stamped onto the sheetmetal to the top left of the fuel tank) and the engine number (to the right of the fan housing support facing into the car) and we'll be able to identify what years and take a guess at whether the engine matches the chassis. If it does you definitely want to keep them together as a 1968 911S is a rare car. andy 67S |

Please add the info from the paint badge on the left door hinge post.
Besides the engine serial #, there are two other numbers to find down and to the right of it (one of those is the type # 901/xx).

Flieger, the red car is a '68S, RoW only - they didn't have marker lights. Since there were no US Esses in '68, that would be the point of confusion.

There was a '68 911 T/R race car. That car kicked serious butt, but was far from a stock 'L' or 'S'.
