cam timing

Hey all, I am starting the timing on my 2.2.I am using Wayne's book, factory manuals and the board for reference. I started off by putting the z1 mark at the case parting lines, then clamped the chain on the #1 side. I then took off the cam nut and turned the dot straight up,I then proceeded to the #4 side ,took the cam nut off, tried to turn the cam so the dot was up, no go.It will turn about 1/2 turn that it. any help suggestions would be great. A couple of other thing to consider, the rockers are all in on the #4 side, i did not need to open that side up, I read some where that the timing marks on some flywheels are not accurate, truth or b.s.?

The problem is solved IF you back the crank around ccwise about 45 degrees then your cams will be free to turn because you dont have any piston high in the cylinder and the valve movement will clear the piston tops.
Self doubt is more of a problem than faulty parts from the factory

back off the crank, set the cams in the dot up position, have tensioners in place, pin the cams finger tight the nuts to hold everything together.
Set dial guage on #1 intake and turn the crank 360 degrees to tdc and reset the pin in the cam gears. back the crank around to relieve the dial guage to 0 and re set to TDC checking the set measurment on the dial guage
Some times you have to fudge with the cam to get the pin to set. When you make the pin fit be sure you load the cam against the pin to get the correct setting on the dial guage.
If youre off too much on the dial guage from the set you want where the pin is, moving it one space on the gear represents .15mm usually throwing you too far off the setting you desire.
Sometimes its necessary to move the gear 1 link inside the chain and starting over to get the desired setting.

Good Luck,
Bruce
