The blob on my engine.

Hey guys, I just got my first 911 and was looking around a for a small oil leak underneath the engine. I didn't find the leak, but I did manage to find what appears to be a giant blob of something like JB Weld. What in the world could this be here for? The engine runs great and just leaks a little oil, so I wasn't concerned before, but now I am.

Looks like JB weld. There was some porous cases and that looks like someone had a leak so that was his remedy

As you say the engine runs fine... So keep an eye on it and enjoy your car.

Don't be tempted to see what's underneath.

if you look at that cylinder above the repair it appears to be leaking from between the case and cylinder. i would check for pulled studs or loose head bolts. notice the one to the left seems to be dry and not clean and wet around the same area.

good luck and i would start looking for a replacement case. just to have for a future time.

i would be real carefull in checking for loose head bolts.... one wrong move and oyu could have a busted or pulled one.... just go enjoy your car if you can live with the leak.

If is a 3 liter case there were some cases that had the steel insert that is cast into the case leak. The initial "fix" from the factory was to replace the case under warranty. A short time later, Porsche changed the fix from replacing the case to applying epoxy where the steel is exposed. The fix pictured above leaves alot to be desired as it simply sloppy work. My advise is to leave it if it shows no signs of leaking.

This is what I found on the issue. I used JB Weld on my '86 3.2, but a lot less than yours has.
