Good Cams for 930

A buddy of mine is cleaning out his garage of nonessential Porsche parts and he has a set of Web cams that I could pick up. The number on the box is 05-281 and I checked on the Web Cam web site and found the following description:

Valve Lift 485/.452
Duration 258°/246°
Duration @ .050" 238°/226°
Grind Number 20/21

Special performance profile for 911SC / Carrera / 964 engines. Works with stock injection. Price Per Set (2)

I have an 86 turbo with a few bolt-ons: k27-7200, 1 bar boost, B&B exhaust, Andial intercooler, etc. I was thinking about picking them up and using them when a rebuild is necessary.

Does anyone have any experience with these cams in a 930?

Regards, Dave

Dave,

Those cams would work just fine in your 930, especially with CIS.

Just make certain that your AFR's are OK above 4K at 1 bar.

Call Laurie @ Webcam and ask her opinion relating to how you are going to drive the car. 951-369-5144
She ground them and she knows her stuff.. she's fun to talk to and she can recommend the cam timing for them.

Those cams have a little more lift and duration than 964/C2 cams which for her are grind #40.
Going beyond 964 cams in a CIS 930 with 7:1 compression ratio may leave you wishing you had more midrange power if you drive on the street.

Her favorite 930 street cam is SC/Carrera grind for good midrange power.

Why did not Porsche go with the SC/Carrera grind for good midrange power to begin with when they sold the car?
I don't understand why Porsche never used these cams if they were better than the stock original 930 cams?
Was it emissions or what?
Fred

They did use them...
They used SC cams in the higher horsepower 930S.
and,
The '94 3.6 liter turbo S came with 964 grind cams in it.

Why don't they put a GT3 motor into a Cayman and strip out the plush interior?

I'm guessing that emissions played a big part in cam choice at Porsche in the mid-80s especially for the CA market which took a big chunk of US sales.
