Corvair style flatfan

I came across a VW guy that had a flat fan with a 90 degree fan belt.

Has anyone seen one like that on a flat 6?

I can guess that they more power to run and that they might slip of. The VW guy told me that it had never slipped of for him.
He also supplied me pictures of another VW with a homemade flatfan (the 2 last pictures).

Sure. They were on several of the race cars. There is one on a car I saw at Orbit racing last year. Nice widebody. Very rare though and several posts here on making or building this kind of setup for the 911 engines.

They used them on the 935's. They can be fitted to a 911/930 but would require a custom intake and a pile of cash!

euro911sc, I have not been to Rodgers new shop yet. I have heard it is nice. I guess he ran out of room here in Jupiter.

This guy is talking Corvair-style.

935s and prototypes used shafts and bevel gears, much more stout and precise.

I have seen threads about flat fans here, but I have not seen anyone, in pictures or IRL, who's actually running one (with a 90 degree belt).

It's overkill for 90% of the engines but it would be cool!!

Yeah lots of talk and 'Oh that would be sooo coool!' commentary, but no one actually takes action Probably, when you really look into it its just prohibitively expensive.

Bill, did they move? I was over at the B-Line hwy. shop and it looks like they have more than enough space... I'm assuming that is his new place and it is really nice.

The sound those flat fans make is intoxicating to me at least. I think it is more the gears meshing making the sound then the actual fan.

I value function over form anyday, but this gives full flow. I'd be keen to know what the figures are on that.

Check out how far underdriven this fan is from the crank...curious what the fan final ratio is. The motor here is flipped? Is the "nose" of the crank carrying another flywheel to the transmission?

It's actually overdriven. It looks like the fan turns about twice engine speed which is probably way too fast. The Corvair type belt drive, although badmouthed and poo-poo'd all the way back to 1960, is actually an excellent system when properly set up.
regards,
Phil

I don't think that the flat fan gives more air flow at a certain speed. I just think it gives a more even airflow over the cylinders.
But you would have to design and make a new shroud, but how would that be tested? Worst case you might have less air to a cylinder than the stock design.

I think its important for the various "designers" of flat fans to take careful note of how far away the 935 FF were mounted above the cylinders,.......

High velocity air requires space to make turns.

On another note, the very LAST place I'd mount intercoolers is above the engine cooling fan. Just think about all that 120+ deg F air getting blown over the engine and how that affects cylinder head temperatures. Pretty well cancels any gains from the IC's.

That might be one of the reasons that he had very disappointing dyno results. I think he (the engine with the flat belt) ended up with just a little above 100 hp....

Isn`t this exactly what a 911 turbo engine sees with a full-bay intercoolerAll air goes throe IC before engine fan push it throe engine
