Need some advance advise for 87 Carrera
Car has 129K miles and head stud broke. Are there, rule of thumb, parts that are replaced when this many parts are removed? Should I have the cams and rockers rebuilt? That cam timing stuff has confused the... me. Are the rings ever replaced without cylinder work? I plan to replace the timing chain and whatever else that goes with that. I have the 911 rebuild book and read thru it. Whoever said, " Porsche engines are a different Animal," understatement. This is a lot of work to miss something because of inexperience. Figured out why I work on computers instead of Porsche engines.

Sorry to hear about the head stud discovery.
Unless you are going to change the cams to 964 or other then no you wouldn't need to unless the cams have pitting or lots of wear. Cam timing is confusing until you do it once then for me it was "what was all the confusion about". Helps to have it set in place and doing it. Yes replacing the rings is common. The problem though could be that you have alusil p&c's. If you do, leave the piston and cylinder together when you remove them. For the timing chain take the cam box covers off and post a picture here to get opinions on replacing them. You have cut the old ones off and use a master link chain if you don't split the case. Another thing to be careful of is to put rags in any part of the engine that is opened up to keep dirt out of the case. Lots and I mean lots of pictures are a great help to put back together and pictures of assembly to check to see if you reassembled correctly. Plastic bags and a sharpie, everything goes into a bag and is labeled ![]() I do the computers too and the engine work is way more satisfying. Porsche engines are great to work on especially after working on a few others. Now that I have done one, can't wait to do another ![]() And oh so many "while you are in there" things ![]()

This may not be popular, but WHY?
Is the engine running strong. If so just replace the studs on one side. Betcha it was a bottom stud, probably cyl 5. Next time I run into this it is what I am going to do. I wound up rebuilding the whole engine and altho it runs a little better, it doesn't run 5K better. ![]()

My fear is starting the first time and hearing noises. Then silence, except the pounding of your own heart beat and the $$$ signs blurring your vision coming from your pockets. The car was running fine when, believe I have dirty injectors and maybe sticking, all I was doing was replacing a leaky valve cover gasket and found that litte gift from the head stud Clauss. It is #1. What are the benefits of swapping out the cams to 964 cams? I willl post the pictures I took last night with the timing chain covers off.

Ditto on fear of strange noises when starting after the rebuild. Didn't have any but my rear main seal leaked so out came the engine to replace. I also sent my injectors in to be cleaned for the rebuild. I also did the cam timing to the wrong mark on the pulley.
![]() My understanding is the 964 cam flows a little better giving better power. The person to talk to about the cams is Camgrinder (John Dougherty) at Dougherty Racing Cams Great to deal with and very knowledgeable. The while your in there is a lot of temptation. I did the performance springs and a much more aggressive cam and just a few other mods. ![]() ![]()

![]() I think we can wrap this situation up, 12 steel studs, valve job, bottom end reseal and top end gaskets. The mains were smooth as a babys butt on a fully standard mains, replaced the intermediates, the chain rails, rocker seals, and return tubes. You ll be picking it up on Saturday Thank you for entrusting me with your engine. Bruce ![]() ![]() |
