Hello,
I have a 1975 911 s and the engine needs to be rebuilt. I would love to do it myself but I live in an apartment building and have no space or tools to do it. Right now the car is in Los Angeles but I am from the San Francisco Bay area. Can anyone give me any suggestions on the best options (quality/price) that I have in both places: Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay area. If there is any place along the way that you think is worth the drive please list that too. How much should I look to spend? Thank you very much for your time and suggestions!!! I will post some pictures of the car very soon. John Last edited by magic06; 01-05-2010 at 12:36 PM.. |

For the LA area, I use Tony and Marco Gerace at TLG Automotive: TLG Auto Porsche Service in North Hollywood, CA

It all depends on what you want. For some builds, I'd recommend you see Henry at Supertec, even though he is in Fallbrook (probably closer to San Diego than where there car is).

The cost of building a 2.7 is so high and the residule value is so low, I would look for a 3.0 even if you had to do a top end, it would be more like an investment because of the residule value.

Hi Bruce, going with a 3.0 was my first choice but somebody talked me out of it. My engine smokes a little bit but only until it warms up, and it is leaking but I didn't have any tests done on it so I don't know if I need a complete rebuild or not. Plus to me it doesn't look like its consuming a lot of oil.
I think I will start contacting some of theses rebuilders and at the same time, look for another engine just in case. |

Well, if youre going to run anything, be sure you have at least a trombone oil cooler, be it a 2.7 or a 3.0. 3.0 is still the way to go, value for the money

There are some great shops in SoCal and in between, but there also plenty of fine Porsche shops in the Bay Area. I always recommend using one that has a good, solid reputation in the PCA. We have several regions.... Golden Gate, Loma Prietta, Diablo, Redwood. You can get some input on the forums on the Golden Gate site... PCA - Golden Gate Region | It's not just the cars, it's the people!.
If you decide to buy a used engine, note that we also have an excellent dismantler-- Partsheaven. The owner and staff have combined Porsche experience that totals likely 75 years or more, and they are enthusiasts. Since there are so many shops/mechanics with good reputations amongst the PCA, I recommend them over those without PCA references. Depending on where you live in the Bay Area, do some networking with the PCA and you'll find what you are looking for. I would be happy to help if you need more specifics. - Mike 1975 911 PCA member since 1987 GGR member Porsche Racing Club #4

+1 on Bruce's recommendation to go 3.0. You'll spend *significantly* less money....

Red Line Service (Marc Bixen) - Long Beach, CA PH# 562.901.2900
Marc took over the Red Line Service helm from Pete Zimmermann when Pete retired 10 years ago. PZ presence is still there and Marc was PZ lead guy for years. Even though PZ is retired, they talk regularly. |

+1 for Supertec http://forums.pelicanparts.com/supertecperformance.com
All they do is air cooled, 911 based Porsche engines and they do them with a pride rarely seen in the automotive industry. They are closely involved with California Porsche Restoration, a Porsche restoration shop turning out some of the nicest long hood cars anywhere. Here's the engine Supertec built for me 7 years ago. It still running perfectly: ![]() And we've all seen the Supertec short stroke magic: ![]() ![]()
