Porsche Crest 1989 930 Engine Build Questions...

The following list is the engine build project for my 1989 930. I am currently looking for a shop(s) to do the work for the items hightlighted in yellow. Also, I would extremely appreciate any suggestions/input anyone has to offer on the build. The goal for the motor is 400WHP for use on road coarse events.

I appreciate anyones input!

Chad

Looks like a nice project Chad. I'm going through a similar process on my '79 930 right now.

You can check out my rebuild thread:
Jacob's rebuild thread

Have you considered using LN Engineering Cylinders with JE pistons? Their kits are considerably less expensive than the Mahles (priced at nearly 6k last I checked). I'm using these 100mm Nickies jugs with JE pistons (7.5/1 comp ratio) for a true 3.5 liters. Required machining the case spigots oversized, although LN Engineer also will make this size in slip fit:

Chad.
I have had good luck with Ollie's in CA for machine work. I believe that CGARR on the forums is local to you and has a machine shop so that may be convenient.

Of course I will defer to Mr. Weiner above as one of the Porsche Prophets who has foregotten more than most profess to know...

Chad, I had Rennsport Systems do everything you have shown in yellow (except the oil pump and cam line restrictors) to the motor Im building. Cant go wrong. Put it in a box, ship it off, get it back in a short amount of time. Done.

I noticed that you listed Imagine Auto to modify the fuel head. Did you know that IA is out of business since last year? I don't think a stock turbo can support 400 whp. So you may want to consider upgrading a turbo.

Mike,
Yeah, really bummed out about the IA thing. I was working with Stephen Kasper exclusively on this engine.

The turbo is upgraded.

I just had my heads rebuilt with new guides, white seals, springs for GE-60 cams and titanium retainers by Arron Burnham at Rennwerks in Camarillo, Ca. From what I can tell, they are better than new. Excellent resource for information, competitively priced and reasonably fast service. It's harder and harder to find people who you can respect and are honest; Aaron fits the bill.

Holy cow you're going all out! maybe kennedy clutch and you can re-use some stuff (ie: -- why are you buying oil pump?).

The engine had quite a number of miles on it. I plan to do quite a bit of track time with the car when complete and I want to ensure longevity with new parts. I was advised to go to a newer oil pump and sold my old one. I haven't made up my mind on which pump to go with yet. Looking for some advice on the board....

Thanks. Yeah, I checked your post some time ago. I try to use the board for as much research as possible.

LN Engineering isn't completely off the table for me. I have considered them in the past and talked with a gentleman over there a few times. However, I like the idea of using something that has been developed by the OEM that is a little more harmonious from a thermal standpoint.

There's nothing more 'thermally harmonious' than LN's Nickie cylinders. No cylinder out there cools better, which is paramount for a turbo motor. Paired with JE pistons, their pairing in terms of thermal expansion is as good as Mahle P/Cs. Just don't mix and match, due to the alloy differences. The kicker is that JE has just released their new FSR pistons for Porsche applications above 95mm...for the first time, they put Mahle engineering to shame:

As far as the referrals above, both Steve and Aaron are TOP TOP TOP notch. Straight shooters, honest as Mother Teresa and great beerside company, to boot.

As others have said... talk with Steve.

...might be going out on limb, but you have listed very good/great items on everything, except one, fuel mgmt. Seems like budget not an issue so get a carerra intake and a real fuel mgmt system, or cut back on a few things and get that. How about electronic boost controller too...
