Going nuts building an engine stand
I think I went nuts and perhaps need a therapist.
I went to Harbor Freight to buy an engine stand for $49.95 minus 20% using a 20% off coupon and next thing I knew I was drilling and cutting and having welding and powder coat done. The stock Harbor Freight item turned from this: ![]() into this: ![]() ![]() \ ![]() ![]() ![]() It all comes apart into 3 pieces with removal of one bolt. Sometimes I think my wife is right, I am crazy.

That's pretty sharp! I just built one from scratch a month ago. It's not as pretty!

I bought the same stand with the same coupon last weekend. I like the caster upgrade....not sure I understand the mod with the benchtop yoke receiver. The stock receiver seems to work fine with my yoke. I like how you flipped the front angle, that makes the engine sit more level it would seem.

The bench top mount is really a vise that allows one to rotate the engine to any angle one wants while working on it. Say, to 30 degrees which may be a nice angle to install rockers or whatever.
The lynch pin I showed in earlier pictures only allows the engine to be flat or at 90 degrees to flat and I don't really use it. I wanted full swivel casters so I didn't have to make "3 point turns" moving the engine around in my tight garage. Harbor Freight has nice casters, all one needs is some 2 X 3 X 0.125 steel tubing (I got for $20 cut to spec.) which allows the casters to mount with the bolts concealed as well as an opportunity to increase the track of the casters. Flip the center tube, drill some holes and you are good to go. Edit: Since I cut it off and reset it, I don't know what angle the stock Harbor Freight yoke would come out at with the mod above. ![]()

Summit Racing also sells a similar catch pan for $36.

The Jaz drip pan I have shown in the pictures is a touch short and narrow (it belongs to a friend), so I have ordered this Jegs pan JEGS 80060 and I will show a side by side pictorial comparison when it arrives.

As promised here is a photo comparison of the Jegs (black) and Jaz (red) engine stand oil pans.
The pans are essentially identical in size and shape. It appears Summit Racing sells the Jaz pan with their own brand name on it. It also appears in the Summit photos that their pan is made of smooth material, the (older?) red Jaz pan I have pictured has a rough surface that is very hard to clean. The troughs at the back of the pan are deeper in the Jaz pan and harder to clean as well. The Jegs pan has a spout at the front to dump oil easily by lifting the back of the pan. The costs of the two pans with shipping is essentially the same and Jegs sent mine FedEx 3 day with Saturday delivery. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I went the cheap route. Here's my $10 pan from Pepboys affixed with a strip of Velcro at the front crossbeam. I just snapped this a few minutes ago.
I did the same when I built my engine last time-never had any issue with being able to capture any oil finding its way down to it. It also spans the entire width of the engine by a couple of inches on both sides. ![]()

A lack of width is an issue with the Jaz and Jegs pans.

Sorry, I should've thought about this pan type the other day. I'm sure I have pics from a couple of years ago. I tossed the old one when we moved, but saw them at Pepboy's the other day when I was stocking up on Brake (engine) cleaner.
