Chain box stud removal to clear 964 distributor?
I've got the interference issue on one of the larger M8 studs on the LH chain box/cover with the 964 distributor I'm putting in. I could just try and cut it down closer to the boss and put a standard hex nut on, which would be thinner than the normal locknut. Or, I could pull the stud out and use a hex bolt in its place. This seems less "abusive" to me.
My question is, am I asking for trouble trying to pull one of those studs that has been in place 26 years? I've got the motor assembled, so it would be convenient dealing with a broken stud at this point in the game.

I used a shorter stud in that area too for mine. Is it the one with the extra long boss? If so that was the boss I milled down for extra room too.

That's the one. How easily did the old stud come out-or did you trim the existing? I've got the cover on and sealed, and am trying to not take it off. Shoulda remembered and addressed this earlier, as I'd heard of this issue some time ago-but spaced on it.
I've got heat and stud removers-I just don't want to break the damn thing and turn this into a one day project.

Mine came right out with just double nutting it, that was before I had my puller. Its easier than in a mag case. 8mm is the same as exhaust studs, you wont break it.

I'll give it a shot, thanks Craig.
