how to clean zenith 40's
So I bought a 2.2 t engine to put into my 914 I was looking in the carb's and seen alot of gunk I want to soak them in either pine sol or carb cleaner but have no experience with these carb's any one have a how to or recommendation on what I should remove or not remove.. before soaking them

They are pretty straight forward, but a few things to remember:
Before soaking in cleaner, remove all gaskets, o-rings, diaphrams, etc. The holes in the accel pump nozzles are very tiny and the neck is fragile....They will be plugged for sure. Remove by twisting back and forth while lifting up. You have a checkvalve and another piece under these nozzles, Don't let them fall out and be lost when you turn the carb upside down....... Those look pretty neglected - will be a project.

Ok here are a few pics that I have of the tear down.. I cleaned the manifolds but I think I am going to sandblast them and Dispersant coat them it is a coating on turbos and cylinder heads I use to help radiate heat.. The last picture is of the dispersant coating I will be using on the cam cover's valve covers and manifolds..

I come from Turbo cylinder head fabrication and mostly Dohc engine's..

So now that I have the carb body cleaned what how should i go about cleaning the jets and other parts ? are they all universal to each hole or do the need to go back into the exact same hole they came from.. Rite now I have each piece organized so they go back in the exact same spot the came out would it be best to clean them individually or just soak everything together ?
Also anyone now where to get a zenith rebuild kit in California ? |

Cleaning is pretty straight forward. the inside where fuel is needs to be very clean. Use several cans of carb cleaner per carb. the small jets at the bottom of the float bowls are also one way check valves but look the same as the little ones at the top. don't mix them up if you choose to remove them. just spray and use a soft small brush to get the crusty stuff off. Blow out passage ways with air. The outside is just for looks, clean or paint or re-plate as you wish. The gasket kit is crap, don't expect quality or instructions. Lube O-rings when re assembling, check float hight. Other than that, your looking good

I tried forever to find one of them. Never did but found a donor carb in the parts section. Check with al lkosmal on the 911 forum he might have some.

I just bought three of those this past week from a guy on Ebay that was selling both the springs and diaphragm caps. He was nice enough to just sell me the springs only for a very reasonable price. You might check there.

My Zeniths looked similar in starting condition to yours when I rebuilt them. The accelerator pump (transition circuit) nozzles were a pain to get cleaned out. I used air and ultimately also a fine strand of copper wire to get them flowing free.
Go to your local NAPA or otherwise and get yourself a can of carb cleaner (not aerosol but rather the kind you soak parts in). I bought a gallon can but probably could have gone smaller. It'll last me several lifetimes! Put all the little pieces into the basket, dunk and let it sit overnight. When they come out and you hose them off with a light spray of aerosol carb cleaner they will look nearly new. ![]() Here's what came out of the top of mine! ![]() Before and after a good soak: ![]() I also disabled/removed the aux. decel fuel enrichment circuit. I used lead shot in the specific jet, etc. to disable it and then used vacuum caps on the nipples at each port. Those ports sure make carb synch easy with a set of vacuum gauges!

OK so here is what I have done so far the only thing I don't remember how to get back together is in the last picture.. Not sure what the are called but the solex jet on the left that is screwed in on the left and the tubes to the right of the carb on the bench... as you can see how I have them in the second to the last picture is wrong and looking for the correct way to put them back..
Touched these up with some 60 grit to get rid of the ledge.. ![]() Vs. Stock ![]() Also cleaned the edge of these up ![]() Installed into the body ![]() Here is one of the pics that I need help with ![]()
