Differences of engine cooling fans
My fan is looking rather old and chipped, so I would like to replace it.
Can I use a later model fan ( the one with curved blades) to replace it? If so, is the diameter the same? Or...do I need the housing too?. Thanks Bob

The curved ones are curved for less noise and are less efficient at flowing air. I do not know if they fit the older housings.

Perpetual motion machines violate the laws of physics.

Maybe....maybe not....look up Howard Johnson (not the ice cream guy) and his permanent magnet motor.
I built one years ago using a bicycle gen (front wheel type) as an axle...with ceramic magnets from Radio Shack...and an old 6 volt tail light form the conversion of 6 to 12V on my Harley. It was very dim....ran with a wobble....sounded like s**t....squeeked...but functioned for almost 11 years. Gave it to a teacher who said it violated the laws of physics....he took it apart to find the battery I supposedly hid in the base...not there....never was.....and could not put it back together. To make one that would put out a bunch of power....figure 10 - 20 Kw....would take maybe $20K of rare earth magnets. There are many designs linked from HJ's site. Makes you think...maybe some laws are made to be broken...or...these motors don't come under that heading. Bob

Bob, the 3,6 fans are MUCH larger than the earlier ones and won't fit.

Ah...the direct answer.....thank you.
So.....if I were to switch....I would need the fan, housing, and probably a new shroud (because of the diameter change)...? Also a new alt as well. Hmmm...with all this...I will stay with the same setup. Thank you all Bob

If you were to switch, you would need a 964 motor

This was taken from a Howard Johnson website:
As of Sept. 2007, we do not know of anyone who has successfully replicated one of these motors, though many have tried, and many are presently making an attempt. If you are interested in pursuing this task, we invite you to join the HJ_Motor discussion list for that purpose. Bob, Sounds like you should build another one and show them how it's done. Just cut me in on some of the royalty money ![]() -Andy
