So got the heads back late yesterday afternoon, and they are perfect. Started the re-assembly this morning and got the heads and cam towers on and cam timing set at 1.3mm this time around dont want to advance too much. Checked both left and right banks about 10 times before and after chain tensioners were on and both dialled in exactly. So tomorrow early going to check piston to valve clearance and install rest of rocker arms and set gap, button up chain case etc, hope to have the engine back in the car late tomorrow afternoon. One thing I did notice is that the engine is a lot harder to turn over by hand which means I have a good seal now on valves and heads and I feel the compression is going to be spot on....

Ok so the car started and I ran her in at the recommended 2000rpm for 20 minutes, lots of smoke which cleared after 20 mins.
Changed the oil and started her again just to be sure all good quite a hard start and needed throttle to run, left off throttle and revs dropped to zero and stalled. I have not done the ignition timing yet and have not changed any CIS settings. I believe I need to have the CIS adjusted as I have the 964 cams now correct?
Should I richen up the mix a bit to start with as it seems she is not getting enough fuel to start without giving some throttle?
I have a good Bosch guy locally who set her up previous to the rebuild. Engine sounds great when it is running just wont idle yet, and before anyone asks, CIS was completely gone over new airbox, hoses etc so no air leaks.

Get the timing set right first, then move on.

Timing is probably why it won't hold an idle. If it's retarded it will fall on it's face at idle and die.
