What about your piston/cylinders? Did you have those rehoned/machined? Are they Nikasil? That is by far the largest ticket item in most of these rebuilds...

I just completed a DIY rebuild on my 3.3 turbo motor...roughly $10K..New Dougherty 964 cams, 3.2 cylinders plated rebored to 3.4...some lightly used in spec 7:1 mahles, ARP hardware..heads ported to match carrera intake..all rockers rebushed/resurfaced...KEP stage 2 clutch..new bearings..etc..etc. Also had to upgrade my injectors to 60lb and replace a broke 3bar map sensor and re-pipe the intercooler to throttle body...

Depending on your skill level paired with Wayne's engine rebuild book...you might consider DIY'ing your engine..Just a thought.

I had EBS Racing source my machine work/parts..

Well boys... the mechanic called me back yesterday... Seems I need a new set of cams. everything else is good. He also broke the bill down for me. The rebuild itself is 6800.00 the other 3200.00 would cover parts needed. I like the guy, told him to take the high road and not cut any corners. He said he would never risk ruining his reputation just to make a buck. And he also said he wouldn't let me make a mistake by putting aftermarket parts on the engine.

Sounded so good that i will now incorp this speech every time i try to sell a job at the body shop.

On a side note i drove down to Fabspeed yesterday. They are using my headers as a template to make a new generation of headers that will be for sale in a couple of months. Although the first set for my car should be ready in a week or so. The exhaust will now use the stock heater hoses

My version

My pistons looked fine, just really built up with carbon and the cylinders look great and I believe are to be honed. They seemed to be the Nikasil material, slightly magnetic. I know when I read about this in some old posts, that some think the honing isn't ever necessary if the surface roughness meets factory spec. I'm hoping they and the new rings sing a happy song when I break it in. My bottom end builder/assembler whose been around a long time says (like they all do) they should work fine. Supposed to get the "bottom end" back on friday and then I have 4 weeks or so to get it back together, drive it some and be ready for a DE in early April. Like to get some easy wear and an oil change on it before speedy driving. Plus what-ever misc. tasks are required after a rebuild. Unless abused, these engines "should" be in good condition, I think I'm very lucky.

I am probably the least qualified to post here compared to the likes of Steve etc but my question would be why you are doing the bottom end. Isn't the 3.0 supposed to be a very reliable if detuned motor. Why not just do a top end job on it?

I ll open the center case to replace intermediate shaft bearings, check the mains which would be indictative of the rod bearings, put new seals on everything, clean the case, change the brittle chain rails, reseal the centerline.
Usually there is no wear on the mains but with the p\c s off youre not that far away from a reseal of the bottom.

Yes, Bruce that's exactly what happened. I'm glad i did the complete rebuild...just a little sticker shock at first. This car should be something else when it's done. i mean every part of this car has been replaced with factory new, except for the rims which i regret buying. They look good but i really wanted ruf speedlines. We painted the car carrera white and i chose red leather for the interior. The wheels are rota fox 17 inch and will remain black. the car should be complete in the next 2 months. that would put this restoration at exactly 41,000 dollars and 11 months.

An option is to shop carefully for a used engine in good shape and sell yours as a core.....Here's what I picked up last week and happy to get it at the price I did (got paperwork to verify the work):

Recently removed upgraded '81 SC engine and transmission from my '81 SC after car was damaged in front, causing parting out the car. Upgrades include 1) Max Moritz 3.2 liter pistons and cylinders, 2) 964 cams, 3) Raceware hardware, balanced rods, Carrera oil pump. New parts included: intake valve sleeves, rod bearings and rods balanced, and rocker arms. Transmission clutch disk, pilot bearing and fork were replaced. All of the above was performed in 2004 at 120,000 miles approx. and now at 132,000 miles. Transmission has recently installed Quaif LSD. Good solid reliable running engine with no oil leaks. Transmission will need third gear syncro replaced in future depending on how fast you want to change gear. Asking $4,500 for engine.

No Chris...His name is peter. I'm really starting to like the way he's treating my car. He came to the body shop the other day to take parts off for me so the guys could paint the engine compartment. I will no longer let anyone else work on the car for as long as i own it. Just remember he won't cut corners so you need to budget for that.
