snap ring pliers... or a small screw driver and a pair of needle nose pliers... craftsman makes snap ring pliers that have interchangable tips.

The piston pins are usually off center of the piston. Its much easier to go to the side of the piston that the clip is closest to the outside and its also easiest to put it together that way. I have a couple ice pics that I use to get under the snap ring, circlip.

I use this small dental style pic. Work it under the circlip as shown. Then stick your finger in the wrist pin hole on the piston, work the clip out and catch it with your finger. Keeps them from flying all over the garage.

The piece in the piston is not a snap ring. and as Steve said, the snap ring plier isnt going to work. I used a small screw driver and needle nose pliers. worked fine. For reinstall buy or borrow the Stomski tool. Youll have them all in in 5 minutes. Well worth it...
