Intake Manifold Nuts – NLA – Now what??
Greetings Again,
I am FINALLY in the assembly phase of my 911-SC engine – Oh No! ![]() Is it recommended to reuse these interesting lock nuts or can I replace with a Ny-Loc variety? Or the third option (which would have been more cost effective) part out the rest of the car (LOL)! I have to believe others have run into this and other issues. All advice and recommendations are greatly appreciated. ![]() ![]() |

They are 12 mm instead of 13mm for better clearance. Use them again. If you dont mind them being copper color the same items are available at auto parts store as exhaust manifold nuts.

I have gotten to like the 12mm wrench size flange nuts. Saves dealing with washers in the awkward spots.
I've also used the Allen nuts which are used in six places on the cam carriers. Easier to get an Allen down into the area where the rear #1 and #4 intakes are fastened, at least with carb manifolds. If you use the regular 13mm Nylocks, you may have clearance issues with your wrench with some of them. I haven't had any flavor of these nuts, uncluding plain 12mm wrench sizes, come loose on me. Given my sometimes cavilier approach to things I might have expected to have some problems here, but I haven't. I've often wondered what the deal is with the copper color (are they really copper?) of the slotted/distorted exhaust nuts. VWs used them in some applications. The reduced wrench size has an obvious purpose, but what about copper? |

Thanks everyone for all the information,
Tom, I appreciate your generosity but I have Tuesday's off and I would like to get the intakes and CIS back on the engine today. |

I think the copper is less likely to corrode and weld itself to the steel studs. I use these on my exhaust for that reason.

Just give them a knock with a hammer, to compress the slot. This will restore the self locking, or prevailing torque, action of the nuts.

We just send the copper coated nuts out to be yellow zinc plated. Seems to work if the original look is important to you.

Not sure this will work, but Japanese hex fasteners of that size (M8?) use a 12mm hex. Mostly they're non-locking, but a little blue Loctite should provide an equivalent locking force (with proper tightening torque).

I used regular 13mm nylock om my 2.7 CIS. Worked fine. A good 1/4" socket will work.

I also use those copper nuts to hold my exhaust on.
