87-89 carrera 3.2L w/ 915 trans?

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a newb question or not....but the search button was fruitless so i'll risk it....

can an 87-89 3.2L engine that came stock mounted to a g50 trans be separated and connected to a 915 trans?

do the g50 and 915 have the same bell housing shape and bolt pattern?

is the clutch and/or flywheel situation unique to each trans?

You have to change the flywheel to the 915 Carrera unit, 84 to 86, with new bolts
you need 3 short bell studs for the 915. The short G50 stud can be used in the starter position.
A complete 915 clutch package is required
Now you can install the 915 against the 87 3.2.

I wouldn't claim the bell housing is exactly the same shape but the transaxle to engine case bolt pattern is the same, and fwiw it's also the same on every air cooled VW bug motor from the beginning.

Mike - as long as it is the 9 bolt flywheel (1978-1986), yes. The 6 bolt flywheel (1970-1977) of course won't fit your crank (and that crank won't fit your case).
