Shifting problems

Need a little help here Gents. Going down I-10 go to shift into 5th. no go. Now I have my foot in it not just poking along when I do this. Thinking its a coupler problem, I limp home, smell burning rubber, but manage to get it into 2nd., 3rd. and 4th. Check the coupler, everything looks good. In the garage it shifts fine, start the engine depress the clutch seems to not want to go but with a little force it goes into all gears. Thinking I smoked the clutch????
1988 Carrera, 120K miles, runs strong. Any ideas?????
