Can I get a little help?

I need some assistance. I'm freaked about his part if the build but am about to time the cams. First I need to check backlash of the chains and intermediate shaft. The book describes a straightedge. I'm confused as to what it is for. Is it a certain width flat edge or can I get any thickness flat bar to make the measurements? Just not sure how to make this measurement????? Sorry I just miss something here and I'm sure it's simple and I'm embarrassed to ask but.......

The intermediate shaft depth to the nose of the case is (off the top of my head) 52mm.
You want the right cam gear outer face to be 52mm from the straight edge. I use a metal yard stick across the flats of the case. The yardstick is 51mm across so I run the guage against the outer gear to the yard stick and I m looking for a distance of 103mm+/-. This is where you load the shims up or down to get the .25mm variance. The shims are .5mm.
The other side is 54.8+the 52mm depth to the gear face and you adjust as necessary.
What you want is the chains running parallel from the intermediate drive gear to the cam drive. so you dont undue wear on the gears the chains are driving.

Quattro - you called it backlash, but Bruce described what we think you are confused about: being sure the chain wheels are lined up. Multi-speed bicycles can run fine with the gears not in the same plane, but angularity of that sort will eat up a 911.

You will want a helper when using a carpenter's roofing square or a metal yard stick to make these measurements, because it has to be held firmly against the intermediate shaft opening. If you let it rock over to the nearby parts of the main case you will get bad readings. One person holding, one measuring, should work.

Me, I bought the tool to attach a really good straight edge in place so I can do this myself without taking multiple readings and so on.

Ok my IS measurement is 51.5mm so that's close, but my other measurements are way different than the description Bruce gave. My straightedge is 28.5mm wide and the total on the right side is 57.5mm. Way different than the book said and also not the same as Bruce. What am I obviously missing. I have the shims and the flange as well as the washer and the gear. Why would mine be so off?

I'm retarded. My problem was that I was setting the straight edge on the chain housings not the outer case itself. My numbers are pretty close. Right side is exact and left side is just slightly more than .25 off. IS is 51.5, right side is 51.5 and left is 51.2. Close enough for me. Removing another washer would put it over 51.5 and make it 51.7. I guess that's what I should do. Ok remov one washer.
