Starter Motor Barrel Nuts

I'm having to remove my IMI Hi-Torque starter as it is having engagement issues - occasionally clashes with the ring gear resulting in that horrible gear gnawing sound, evoking that smart-assed "grind some for me" comment from bystanders. My starter mounting nuts (barrel nuts) are in poor condition and I'd like to replace them during the starter removal.

Question - where can I find 2-ea starter barrel nuts? I've checked on Pelican and can't find them. I think these are larger diameter than the head stud barrel nuts.

they are the same as the head studs but they are 10mm so you could use nuts and washers because you have more room now than with the Bosch starter.

Well they are not quite the same as a head nut although very similar.
You can make a starter nut from a head nut by simply turning down the contact end of the barrel with a lathe or a grinder if you much the turned down section should be 13 mm in diameter and 10mm deep. (numbers from memory YMMV.)

I make them all the time if you need one and don't have a spare head nut.

Hi Dave
You have mentioned that you have a noise while using starter.It could not be just your starter .You can posibly have bad starter ring on the flywheel.
Henry is right the nut re different then head studs nuts but you can use them.Starter nut are originaly the same 10mm threats but a little thinner towards the starter.

Thank you all for the valued information - much appreciated.

The ring gear is not the problem - it's a brand-new one (but good suggestion nevertheless). When comparing starter pinions (Bosch to IMI), I've noticed the Bosch has a 2-3 mm, 45 degree corner chamfer on the tooth ends, whereas the IMI has a sharp, 90 degree end. I'm thinking the chamfer allows for a bit of lead-in during pinion engagement with the ring gear. Plan is to carefully chamfer the pinion tooth ends with a hand grinder, then polish them. It will be a good time to replace those rounded out barrel nuts while doing the job. I'll let everyone know if this solves the problem.

I use the stock barrel nut/s all the time for mounting my starter. The stud is 10 mm x 1.5. Why do you have to grind them? The 10-mm barrel nuts work as supplied. Any particular reason or purpose for grinding the barrel nut/s? See picture below.
