Cost to rebuild a 3.6L
hey pelicans,
Just wondering, how much can one expect to fork over to have a 993 engine rebuilt? I know it depends on the shop, but perhaps a ballpark range? Any thoughts?

Okay, I'll take a stab at it-$5K to $10K for top end only and $10K to $15K for top & bottom. Many variables, upgrades and or parts found beyond spec. No substitute for what?

If you'd like to use 3.2 as a comparison, I've had three of them come through my shop in the last six months.
#1 had bad guides, but good Mahle piston/cylinders. We rebuilt the heads, reringed the pistons and put it back together as a stock 3.2 for $5000. #2 had bad guides and Kolbeschmidt Alusil piston/cylinders. That customer decided on good used Mahle cylinders, JE pistons, DR cams and stand alone FI with ITBs and head rebuild. The total isn't in yet, but it'll easily clear $10,000. #3 had been over-revved badly. After the head rebuild and rod rebuild, the customer decided to increase displacement to 3.4 with LN cylinders, JE pistons and DR cams. $10,500. These were all top-ends (although I did do rods in the last one). If the pistons and cylinders are good, I could get a 3.6 done for $5000-$6000 on a top end as well. |

I agree with about $10-15k for a thorough job from a top flight shop.
