Cylinder Leak
![]() Nasty leak and compression measures at 50psi. The upper pair of studs had loose nuts - finger tight. They have torqued back up to 25 lbsft and seem secure. I will re-test the compression but am concerned that here will be damage to the fire faces of the head/cylinder. Any thoughts? |

Looks like a picture I posted in the last couple months.
Youre this far down, get a valve job and do the exhaust side studs, clean everything up a bit. Bruce |

If engine still in car, I'd proceed as you plan. In addition to a compression test, I'd do leakdowns to see how this cylinder stacks up against the others. Besides, you can use the compressed air of the leakdown test to search for leaks around where cylinder and head join. You can't see too much of this area, but some of it at least.
If you have leaks from that area, I'd rebuild. It will only get worse, while it might be possible at current damage levels to reface the heads (all of them) to remove shallow damage. Or it might not. |

Re-torqued and compression is only back up to 90psi.
Leak down shows 60% leakage and hiss is quite clear. The engine is out of the car for a Clutch change and to do some anti-percolation mods on the carbs so it now looks like the heads need work. |
