Secondhand pistons and cylinders, need to hone the bores?

Hi There

I am just about to start putting my 993 engine back together. I bought a set of 36k mile pistons and cylinders to replace mine and was wondering if I need to deglaze the bores with some scotchbrite. They do not look glazed and the cross hatching is clearly visible. I am using the rings that came with the set, but are replacing the clips that have been removed from the pistons (one side only). I have the rings off of the pistons and have cleaned everything up nicely.

All the best

Berni

I second the idea of scuffing them. I like using the old rings as well, especially with low miles.

Garage
Soap and hot water, ScotchBrite (I like red) and new rings.
A new set of Goetze rings ($140 or so) is cheap insurance.

The time I bought brand new Goetze rings, they had bigger end gaps than the old rings. They were at the wear limit spec. brand new!

That is very common with off the shelf ring sets. You might try buying individual rings for Mahle Motorsport or Andial. Cost is a little higher but size tends to be closer.

Hi There

I did not actually use any soap and water with the scotchbrite. Just used it dry. Is that OK?

Tks

Soapy water washes away the grit, and also breaks up the varnish in the grooves. When i did mine i cleaned them with a red scotchbright and soapy water then put them in the dishwasher. No not married so no problems with the wife *****ing about car parts in the diswasher, or oven for that matter lol.

Hi Ken

Lucky you.......

I so wanted to put my cam towers in the dishwasher. Not worth the risk in my house though.
