back fire

my 2.2 seems to backfire and pop a bit the distributor and leads seem to be fine I think, can this be down to low compression? If so what does it take to fix this? Is it a big job to fix?

The backfire through the carbs is indictative of lean running or bad cam timing.

Are you using MFI? If so, maybe your fuel-shutoff function is not working properly (the one triggered by the microswitch when throttle returns to idle position, but revs are still above idle).

Backfire at partial throttle with carbs is often caused by plugged idle jets.

I ran my tank too low the other day and they plugged with moisture. Pulled them out, blew them out with compressed air. Problem solved.
