I started in '73 on a Honda SL 125 four stroke that was as tricked out as you could get it. Total loss ignition, home made port job and cams, 29mm Mikuni carb, Koni shocks moved up, etc. But when the Elsinore 125 came out you either had one or chased one so the switch to two stroke was made. I rode those for a while but couldn't shake the four stroke thing and built a couple of Honda XRs and ended up with a CCM. Not a good hard pack bike but in the mid-west loam this thing was a rocket...

When I first started there was an old guy named Chuck Minert that rode a BSA (Gold Star ?) that threw up so much dirt it would blow your feet off the pegs. By the time I raced him he was pretty old but he still threw one hell of a roost.
|
Since the CCM was a three speed shifting was rare compared to most two strokes with six speeds. That meant that the roost was continuous and if there were rocks in the dirt (Mt Morris, PA) you had better have good dental insurance if you were behind one...
Not sure who's riding this one but it's at the Trans-Am in Carlsbad; #1 is The Man (Roger DeCoster). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1333460563.jpg |
Which engine is going in that 914 on the lift?
Just curious. |

The 914/6 on the lift is my car and it's on the lift to replace first gear syncro. The engine in it is a mystery. Over the years (nearly 25 ) this little gem has had no less than 6 engine in it. I removed the original engine and put in a 2.4 MFI engine first. It was in there about a year before a customer asked to buy it. That started a long series of engine builds and sales (generally to finance vacations). I used the car for a shop vehicle up until I decided to restore it. For the last 7 or 8 years it has been resting. The engine in the car has a 914/6 case so I would guess that it is probably something like a 2.2 E with Solex cams. I'm a fan of the Solex cams and I would have exchanged the heads for something nicer than the 2.0 T heads that come on the 914/6. So my guess is 2.2 E pistons, Solex cams, counter weighted crank and 2.2T heads with 36mm ports. |
Sounds good to me, should be great in the stock fender'd 914.
I'm still on the fence with my '77 2.7 on the engine stand. Keep the CIS maybe with an SC cam or slap on some weber 40's I have and either keep the insides the same or go crazy with a rebuild. |

That's what I hear, move it to the other side of the bay and rotate the fuel distributor 90-degrees.
I'll probably give that a try and see how I like it. If it's not enough power, I'll pull the webers off the shelf and tinker as much as the budget allows. |
just wondering, how long does the average 996 engine rebuild take? assuming payments are made on time and what not
|
Here is a low profile, big port, CIS system made specially for 914 application. This was on a Carrera 3.0 motor installed in a 914 race car.

That was always my dream bike. I'll never forget Super Hunky's review of the fabled 501.
I just noticed that Ossa Stilletto in the back ground. That must of been a great show. |
I found some old pictures from my early armature days.

I have basically been a street rider all my life...but I remember one day years ago a friend put me on a Yamaha 350 dirt bike.
It was tuned and set up for motocross I think...and it surprised me as to the power a "little" (for me) bike had. It was a total cannon! Riding street machines did not prpare me at all for the front wheel being that far in the air...LOL...definately an eye opener. I gained a huge respect for the people that race those things. Bob |
