Locating Coil Packs
I've finally finished assembling my new race motor, twin plugged yada yada.. Now I'm thinking of where to put the coil packs. Currently my single plug motor i have the coil packs from an XDI ignition mounted to the left hand side of the engine bay being driven by my MSIII system (Once i get the car out of the trailer the xdi is coming out, broke my Hargett shifter at Mosport at the ball and socket and am waiting for Mark to refurb it - its easier to wait and put it back in, than to mess with the stock shifter, though I may just do that to get the car onto the lift so I can install this puppy and get to a dyno). Now i'm trying to think about where to best locate the new coil packs (using the 6 pack coil from DIYAutotune, and have tested both coil packs against the current single plug motor). There is not enough space on the left hand side of the engine compartment to mount them, and to be honest, the run of the second plug wires to the right hand side would simply be way to long for my tastes. So i'm thinking of
a) fabricating a plate to mount to the manifold and mounting them on the top of the motor, or b) mounting them on the bulkhead behind the motor. Position A makes the more accessible should I need to do something like change a pack at the track (hopefully not necessary, but I like to plan for the inevitable), but I have seen many setups (pictures) with position B, so I know that its a viable solution. For those of you who may care. Specs on the new motor Re-plated cylinders with JE 10.5:1 compression ration Web cams 100/102 cam (I think thats what it is, i'm traveling and don't have the data sheet). Pauter Rods ARP head studs and bolts Heads re-done by Anchor Atlantic (I can;t say enough good about these guys, very quick turn around on the heads, and their price for twin plugging was extremely reasonable IMO (about $600 if i remember correctly). MA Shaw fan schroud kit (beautiful piece of fiberglass, even with having to customize). KnockSense knock sensor (mounted under the throttle plate (cut down the spacer to allow the sensor to be located at the block and the plate to fit properly). Motor is a 3.0 SC with a 3.2 intake running MegaSquirt III. Anyhow, any suggestions as to where to best locate the coil packs would be appreciated. The other thing I'm thinking about is trying to add some head temp sensors to monitor head temps, if anyone has done this and has suggestions (one mechanic I know and trust (ok, he;s my godfather and had a shop for years, his son runs the shop now) suggested that I could just jbweld some thermistors to the head fins in a convient spot, and as this is a race motor, I'm not opposed to that, but I'm thinking there might be a better way than using jbweld. |

Typical location for crankfire stuff is atop the rear shock tower. I'm not a big fan of that because its a tough reach back there when the engine is in place. But there's reallly not many other places to put it.
I can see why a lot of people go with a 12 pin distributor because it sure does make twin plugging a lot cleaner!

I have mounted coils like this on a plate bolted on top of the manifold where the heater fan blower was.

Richard Clewett makes a mount for the top of the engine. It reduces wire length.

Thats one of the reasons I decided on coil on plugs. That and all the spark plug wire issues. I have always believed they should be mounted to the motor simply because there is less to disconnect when you pull it out.

I chose the bulkhead route for my twin plug MSII coils and controller (EDIS6). It gave me plenty of room for wiring and EFI plumbing at the rear of the engine and frankly in the 6 years I kept the car, I never had to touch it again.

@Ken, what kind of COP system and coils did you use? Were the ignitors a separate unit or part of the coil?
