3.2 Motor Pricing Help
So I finally made the jump to a full stock spec race motor and am most likely going to sell my current actual stock 1988 3.2 carrera motor. Can you guys help me out on pricing?
The Bad: No documentation No mileage Currently has a seal leak at the chain housing, otherwise completely dry No clutch/flywheel or headers The Good: Perfect leakdown/compression numbers (assumed, will part it out if not) Verified 190hp to the wheels on a Mustang Dyno Perfect Idle Perfect cold/warm start No smoke, ever Supposed new P&C's 2,000 miles ago (will not disclose on a sale as cannot be verified) Has been used in a streetable race car and has run perfectly, including a 400 mile round trip to Arizona Will include harness and motronic Since this is an unknown motor with a leak that will need to be addressed I am not going to expect full market for a healthy motor, but because of the perfect running nature of it I won't let it go anywhere close to core pricing. Thoughts? Is is sellable or should I just use it as a tinker-toy? |

That's a totally sellable engine. Good leakdown, compression and HP numbers are a valuable information to demonstrate the health of the engine.
A leak at the chain case is almost a non-issue. There's only four places it can be leaking 1. O-ring that seals the chain tensioner oil supply port 2. Chain case cover gasket 3. Chain case-to-engine case gasket 4. Camshaft paper seal or o-ring The first two are an easy fix. #3 requires you to remove the cam sprocket and the chain case itself. #4 you can fix with the chain case staying in place. I think this would be a very good donor motor for someone doing an engine swap/upgrade or for someone who needs a soild core motor to build up.

Thanks Kevin, really appreciate the feedback. Do you think $5k including harness and brain is a reasonable number?

A quick search of the for sale forum yielded this one 3.2 for sale in the last 6 months. It sold on ebay for $5000. The ebay link is still active. Sounds like you're in the ball park. If I was ready to drop a later motor in my 71, I would buy it!

The price is not just reasonable but a downright deal if the engine is in good health. 3 litre engines go for 5k in good shape.

I would fix the chain housing leak. It will not be expensive to DIY and easy to do once it is out of the car. This way you have a no-stories / turn-key engine. I agree that $5k will get it sold without hassle and with the leak fixed / leakdown numbers documented, you should ask $6k to get started, IMHO.

I paid $6500 for a bone-stock 3.2, with brain and wiring, last year, so $5000 sounds like a bargain to me!
