Flywheel oil seal recommendation.......
I have been using Victor Reinz rebuild kits in all my engine rebuilds but encountered some sort of problem this time. This is the 14th engine rebuild and never had oil leak at the flywheel before. Oil leak was noticed a couple of days after the engine was filled with engine oil.
I am about to replace the leaking flywheel oil seal when another PP member sent me a PM asking about the Victor Reinz flywheel seal. So I decided to post this problem and seek advice. What other brand flywheel seals do people use now aside from VR kit? Thanks. Tony |

I remember seeing that KACO was a better option than VR.

The favorite seal of the pros is the black and brown seal that a lot of guys like to call the "Wrightwood seal" because Wrightwood Racing hand picks their seals and gaskets and crush rings of all good quality stuff. The Wrightwood seal is actually an Elring Klinger seal. You can see the black & brown pulley seal on this page
1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe - Main Engine Components - Page 1 Kaco is a good seal too.

Looks like, and I hope I am wrong, that Pelican no longer sells the Wrightwood kits. Bummer.

However, keep in mind that a seal here may not fix a damp issue around the crank pulley. This area often suffers from oil leaking past the engine case main bearing insert ( designated as #8) that is usually on account of the o-ring

I use Porsche brand seals and factory install tool because they never leak provided the case is perfectly round.

I actually had a small drip due to the fact that there was a small wear ridge where the old seal had been riding.
I machined up this tool to drive the rear seal 2mm deeper into a fresh spot on the crank. Worked perfectly and not a drip ![]() ![]() |

Removed the scaly magnesium corrosion from the seal bore of the engine case. There was an unusual amount of scale surrounding the flywheel seal.
I think the scale was keeping the O.D. of the seal from "sealing". Down to shiny metal. 320 paper wrapped around a paint stir stick. Seal from Porsche-Elring red.

Glad I did as after researching I found the Elring to be better and failures of the VR seal seemed to be often.
