Head Gasket Installation

Hopefully just a simple question, just starting to put my 81sc engine back together and noticed the head gaskets seem to be flat on the one side and slightly rounded on the other. Which way should they go in ?

Had a quick search and found one similar thread, but no definate answer.

Thanks

Which head gaskets? The only "head" gaskets on an SC engine are:

1. The CE rings that go in the sealing surface of the cylinders

2. The copper base gaskets that go under the cylinders, between the cylinder and the engine case.

I've got the copper ones ok, it's the ones that go on top of the cylindiners, between cylinders and head. Presume CE, not sure what that stands for though.

Look closer at the CE ring and you'll see it has an open side (you can see the springy ring thing in there) and a closed side. The closed side faces up toward the cylinder head.

Actually the CE rings have been argued that they aren't even needed. Example being the later 3.2 engines which have the same cylinders (95mm size, interchangeable with SC) and they did away with the CE ring groove. The sealing surface on the 3.2 cylinders is just plain smooth & flat.
