pilot bearing question
i have a 78 3.0 motor that i rebuilt and am buttoning everything up. I went to install the pilot bearing, and on my 82 motor, the bolts are M8 (I think), the threads on the crank on this 78 are M4 (verified with a tap). I know that I have used this motor, and the only flywheels I have are all set up for the 3 bolt pilot bearing (instead of the press fit). I know that I did not ever have a press fit flywheel ( i have 3, a lightweight, and 2 stock ones) pilot bearing. I'm stumped. I could use m4 bolts with washers, but there would be a hell of alot of play and I figure the bolts would just shear off if the bearing moves (even thought its a tight fit in the flywheel itself), i could drill out the current holes to M8's (or what ever the proper size is) but i don't like that idea, as I'm not sure that would work properly, or i could machine some aluminum spacers to fill in the m8 to m4 bolts and go that way... anyone have any idea what I have here. The flywheels all bolt up properly, and there is the small protrusion in the center where the pilot bearing would sit flush with the flywheel.

The 78/79 is the press fit on the flywheel
The 80 to 86 uses 3 6mm cap bolts, 5 allen 78/79 crank ![]() 80+ crank ![]() Flywheel and pilot 78/79 ![]() Bruce I grew up in your country, 6 miles N of Esperance off rt 30 |

bruce.. thanks.. i just can;t explain why there are 3 M4 threaded holes in the crank, and I know that i used one of the flywheels i have on it when i had it in the car.. oh well, i'll just buy a new lightweight flywheel and pilot bearing from our host so i have the right things.
Cool that you grew up near Esperance. We got our first snow fall this year today, nthing much but still its a start. |

the holes in crank are for a different pilot bearing & flywheel setup -
. 915 type FW for 3.2 crank - you can read the FW number in picture ![]() . pilot brg for that 915 setup ![]() . later G50 style ![]() . Pelican sells all of the types - i recently got them both from here

My pictures are correct. The "915 setup" is only correct for 80 to 83 SC.

Bruce,
So I have a 3.0 Euro, 77-78, so uses a 2.7 crank. I am building this for a 914 application what pilot bearing is used for this application? 914 / 6 flywheel not a flat 911 flywheel, 901 trans. Thanks in advance, PFM

One of the oldest tricks to remove an old pilot bearing....fill inside of bearing and flywheel with grease...drive in a wooden or metal shaft of the slide in tightest fit you can find...and the hydraulic pressure will pop out the old bearing in no time at all.
Have fun. Bob
