How far to tear down unknown 2.4.

I bought a 2.4T with webers for my 66 project. I dont really know its condition or if it has any internal mods. It has the updated tensioners and turbo valve covers, so somebody cared for it a little bit. I'm not inclined to rebuild it now. If it turns out to need a rebuild after i get the rest of the car done, I'll just yank it back out next winter and do it. I think my car will come in under 2100 lbs, so the 2.4T should be fun enough and maybe too much for the 901 box.

My only objective at this time is to clean it up, maybe replace the main seal and the return tubes. I have a Eastwood soda blaster, so I might seal it up and blast it.

Here's my question: the air deflecter tin between the cylinders looks rough. Looks like at least some of it won't come off without taking the chain covers off. Is this a correct assumption? Is there a workaround? I have Wayne's book, and it looks like a fairly big job to remove the chain housings.

if you want to take the chain housings off, you will need a few tools (z bar, dial indicator, crows foot and that cam socket)

the cams have to come out and you have to learn how to do the cam timing but its not so bad if you're patient and have the right tools

You might want to wait till you rebuild the engine. Maybe just clean it up as much as possible.
I just went out and looked my 2.4 over. The only way I see to get that section of tin off is to remove the chain housing. I tried to slide that section out and it stops at the spring plate tab. It could be done by flattening down the tab the spring bar fits into, but that would damage any finish you used on it after you re-installed and bent it back out. It is a snug fit between the cylinder fins and the housing.
Removing the chain housing will require re-timing the cams. You will need a few special tools and dial indicator. You will also need to get the expandable oil return tubes, since you must crush the original ones to remove the tin.

Thanks fellas. I assumed as much. I think I am going to just clean it up and put it in the car. Maybe it won't run that well and I need to rebuild it.

I found the cam timing kinda fun, I had to buy all the tools mentioned above plus two half inch breaker bars

I still remember the dial indicator spec for my car

.018 - .027 lift on the inlet valve

I think I remember that correctly for a 76S

good design for the cam, kinda reminds me of why I like these cars
