Lifting and moving engine - any use something like this?
I have a motor on the way which will show up on a pallet. Thinking of a solution to get the motor off the floor and at some point into my truck. Came across this hitch mounted hoist on ebay. Anyone use something like this? Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

That looks scary plus it wont put it IN the truck.
This would be better ( and cheaper) Engine Hoist / Shop Crane - 1 Ton

Agree the angles are not great and the single point is also not ideal. I found another crane that uses the receiver as a third point. Only reason I'm looking at these is storage space. Don't have much free space. Thx

I used the HF one to move a 3.2 from a rolling cart to the back of a minivan. It wouldn't raise high enough to fit the back of my Durango. Lay a piece of plywood, smooth side up, on both the lift table and the back of the truck and the pallet will slide right in.

Won't it show up at a place with a loading dock? Won't that match your PU's bed close enough? Or use a plywood sheet to bridge and adapt to angles. I slid one into the sliding door of a VW van.
At home, think like an Egyptian - do it with inclined planes. If you have a couple of 2x10s or so which are long enough, you can get them under the pallett while on the pickup bed, and sticking out. Then pull them down and start sliding. That's how I got it out of the van. I bought a motor once, and met the seller half way from our respective houses (about 200 miles each). Slid it, with some bridging boards, from his PU to mine. Heights a bit different, but didn't matter. To get it off my truck, I backed part way into my garage (truck cab way too high to get into garage fully anyway). I put a bolt through the door headers and attached a come along to it. Lifted motor, drove truck out, lowered motor and swung it onto a furniture dolly (Home Depot sells them for about $20) inside the lower door sill (concrete has subsided some on each side of foundation) and it was home. But the lift table has lots of fans for R&Ring these motors, and R&Ring them onto an engine stand. I don't really have room for one, though. I use jacks, and have a chain hoist on a convenient steel I beam for lifting and lowering for the normal run of R&R. Plan B: two guys can pick up these engines. Or three older guys. |
