Interesting exhaust system

Not a 911, but in fact still a flat 6, A Cayman GT4CS was iin the shop for a fuel cell bladder replacement... ( a whole nuther story)

While up in the air I noticed some really interesting thing in the exhaust dept...

Though a flat 6, each bank had a 4 into 1 collector... and one capped off pipe about the same length as the 3 "live" pipes...Think this has something to do with tuning exhaust pulse, or something like that... Have never seen anything like this...

I'm just a retired engineer.. and still learning everyday.. I thought this was interesting..

We're not sure if these headers were installed by Porsche or some other entity..

Passenger side

Drivers

And even though it s a racecar........ You can turn 55 second laps at Lime Rock, or 1:53 at the Glen in comfort.. the car has A/C...

And As if ABS isn't enough.. it has 11strategies for the ABS system... (the chart on the center console)

Wasn't sure where to post this and get any traction.

Interesting. I've seen resonator chambers on the intake, but not on the exhaust.

That's really odd. Somebody must know something, though, you wouldn't do that just for fun. The fact that it doesn't have mufflers (but presumably still meets sound requirements) is telling.

To my mind adding a Heimholz resonator to a collector seems an odd choice, seeing as how there are useful pulses that you need for scavenging and would not want to dampen. Unless it's designed to amplify them?

It's an interesting question whether it meets sound req's. In our area there is a mix of sound restricted and (relatively) unrestricted tracks. A few that have either no limit, or 103 db, for example.

J042 got it right, those are Helmholtz resonators, I've seen them on muffled systems but never on open. Maybe they are leftover from a muffled system that was removed

The way the car came to the shop was with open pipes... It does have other options (mufflers) for tracks like Lime Rock...

I had just never seen this solution implemented...Its got nice 4-1 collectors (a pair, and on a 6 cylinder engine)...and a really well made set of headers... I looked but couldn't find any identifiers of them..

I love the functional details that racecars end up with out of necessity. Like the little gearbox for the brake bias knob.

Knob is direct like normal , gears are only there to drive a potentiometer for position display or data-logging .
If it’s just for display you can now buy knobs with a screen built-in .
