Chain Tensioner Questions 930

All,

I have not decided on which way to go Carrera vs 930 tensioner, but I would like some help on defining what the 930 tensioner upgrade would entail on an SC. I have done a ton of searching on this an I know some people pray at the church of the Carerra Pressure Fed tensioner and others prefer the 930s. The standard upgrade seems to be the the pressure fed tensioner and there are a bunch of kits with all the parts for ~1.5K. I did this once when I rebuilt the the 3.0 in my 914 and was simple buy the parts bolt them on. I haven't found a kit for the 930 upgrade so I'm not sure what in terms of tensioner, wheel supports, chain wheels etc I should be looking for so I can compare the two options. Does anyone have a list of the parts required to change an SC over to 930 tensioner?

Whether you use turbo tensioners with ChainSavers or Carrera tensioners make sure you upgrade you tensioners arms.
The factory arms are available from our host for around $ 425.00/set
Pelican Parts - Product Information: 930-105-510-00-M260

Or Supertec makes an upgraded arm for around $ 230.00/set exchange

Bought the carrera tensioners here second hand for under $500. Cleaned, new crush washers, seals and line supports still well under $500. I have a 930 set I took out with the saver collars with under 500 miles.

Do you need the cores up front or do you just take a core deposit?

I think I can swing that . I was just going to replace the tensioner as a matter of course b/c the current ones might have 150K on them. They have at least 60K on them as thats the mileage I have put on the car. Is there a way to check the health of the tensioner or is it just better to replace for safety's sake.

The factory offers a rebuild kit for turbo tensioners that is pretty easy to install.
Basically, internal o-rings cause most failures. When in doubt, replace it but they can be rebuilt.

Hadn't thought about it really. I've been boxing up all the original parts on this as I modify.
