Main Oil Seal installation???

When I installed a new oil seal using the install tool I pressed it past flush but even with the bottom of the notch that I assume would allow the removal of the seal. I have an oil leak from this area of the engine. Is it critical to have the seal just flush with the case? Could this be my problem?

I can answer for the 993. The seal is recessed two mm. Otherwise, it can leak. Some people use a short section of PVC pipe the same diameter of the seal and knock it in with a rubber hammer.

Flush is usually how it was installed originally. Occasionally with time a small wear ring can appear on the crank end. That's why some will try to set the seal a little deeper to get the lip of the seal riding on better surface of the crank.

Going a bit deeper is not a bad thing. Going to bottomed-out can put the edge of the seal on the oiling holes in the crankcase which you can see in this picture. Those are drain holes to prevent pooling of oil behind the seal that could not escape w/out the holes.

I would guess your seal is crooked and that's why it's leaking? Pushing it in too deep shouldn't make it leak if it is square with the crank.

What seal did you use, not a Victor Reinz?

Oil Seal Install

The new seal is a Victor Reinz and I pushed it in about 2mm past flush. I used the installation tool from Pelican. Thanks for the detailed explanation and picture. Not what?

Well, either let it leak, switch oil, only reason why I say that is because I had a rms leak, put BP in and it leaked even worse, or pull motor and install brown rms.

When I replaced mine, the first time I set it in slightly and it leaked a little. The second time I left it flush and it sealed well.

Now I am wondering if I messed it up with the installation. I used a very thin coating of Curil T on the seal before pressing it in. I pressed 2mm past flush. If the Curil clogged the oil drain hole or holes it could be the problem. I will drop the engine this winter and replace the seal and go flush and without Cuil T. Thanks for the information.
