Al Case oil galley plugs

I am rebuilding a 930 motor. I knocked out the two plugs on the top, main oil galley. These are in the fan housing cradle and flywheel area respectively.

The plugs that came out are 21.7X mm and the hole is 21.6X mm.

What is the typical clearance for a replacement plug? Since they are press-fit how much larger should the plug be. On average, the current plugs are 0.15mm larger than the hole.

Also, what sealant is used when pressing these in? There is some type of residue left. Would Loctite Green (bearings) or something similar be OK to use?

I plan to just turn out some new plugs on the lathe. Another option is to cut them out of plate on a CNC mill. I do have access to one and the part is very simple to draw up.

I am tempted to tap the flywheel end plug for 1/2" NPT and make it replaceable. Not so easy on the front side as I am concerned it will cover up the lateral oil galley.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

part number

911 101 185 00 $3.99 from the dealer if you dont want to dork with them.

I use either 574 or epoxy, helps as a bit of lube, but not too much

Kevin,

Yes, I saw that thread. Some very good information. I am trying to go one step closer to make new plugs. Shouldn't be difficult as long as I know the clearance.

Thanks Aaron. I did not realize that was an OTS part.

Is this the same part number for a Mag case?

When I went to the local Porsche dealer to order the big plugs, they said there was one in Atlanta, which they would order. Then I'd have to wait until some more entered the distribution line from Germany.

So I bought a 3/4" IPT tap and plug.

Clearance on the main gallery plug at the fan (the one epoxied over in this borrowed picture) is, indeed, close.

I was careful with the depth of the tap. I ran the plug in several times as a trial, and determined where I needed to grind a relief on the backside of the brass plug, and how to be able to orient it so the relief pointed to, and made the plug clear, the side passage.

I also cut down the front side of the plug, fearing it might interfere with the alternator. But I think I needn't have done that.

I believe so, the 911 designation in the part # suggests it would have started during the Mag engines.

Porsche is stocking less and less parts here in the states. A great deal of things I order are Germany only.

FWIW I recently ordered some bits from Sunset and the salesperson kindly tacked some small Germany-stocked items I needed onto someone else's larger 'rush' order of parts that were coming from there. It was an unasked-for kindness; I got my stuff in about a week.

Thanks for the part number. I may get some regular plugs and also do some tapping. Based on my recent experiences with doing a number of cam housing spraybar plugs (tapped them with 1/8 NPT steel plugs), I like having the threaded plugs where I can install them reliably.
