Good for a laugh

New engine build project. I think somebody left it out in the backyard for about 10 years.

It's going to need more than tools.

It's going to need duct tape!

I hope it was free, i think a better core will be cheaper than continuing with it. I don't think I would have bothered with rebuilding that.

Looks like it's been at the bottom of the sea, I don't think the aluminum would oxidize like that without salt.

Its customer unit. He got a pretty good deal. Wants it rebuild cheaply and he has a good spare set of P/Cs. As long the crank is good its doable. Actually its doable anyway; for enough money. I suspect the CIS is going to cost a small fortune to fix.

More news. Two of the cylinders were frozen. SOme WD and heat got one loose. The other is more substantial so I'll let it soak longer. Maybe for a couple weeks. When I took the right side timing chain cover off I found a 13mm socket in there. The interesting thing is the socket looked like new, but it was a Craftsman from over 30 years ago. Apparently a mouse was living in the motor mount and started his own coin collection. I should check the dates.

The oldest coin is a 1955 penny, and the newest is a 1994 penny. My guess is the motor has been sitting since 1994.

We took apart an engine a few years ago that looked just like that. Our thought was that most of it was cosmetic, no big deal.
When we finally got the case split, we found that the water in the intake ports migrated past the rings and filled the case. Water being heavier than oil, it settled to the bottom and corroded the case around the sump opening to an unrepairable condition.

Yep, that is possible. I'm mostly worried about the crank.

The important parts of the crank (rod and main journals) are isolated from the possible contamination from the outside. There will likely be a patina of rust on the flyweights but that is superficial.
If you are referring to the chance that the crank was damaged before it was parked, I can't speak intelligently about that. I can only wish you "good luck".
