Flywheel removal problem

i have an 81 sc motor that came into my possession largely disassembled. I am trying to sort out how to remove the flywheel. I am missing the starter ring, and I cannot tell if it is required for the use of porsche tool 238a. i don't want to buy the tool if it needs the ring to work. A mechanic friend of mine said that if I used an air powered impact driver I could just zip those bolts right out without any porsche tool, but I am nervous that I will turn the crank in the process and foul things up (the pistons have been removed) Has anyone worked these bolts out without the porsche tool? Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Get a heavy piece of strapping (Stanley makes one in the hardware section of HD or Lowes made for reinforcing a fence gate). Drill out one of the end holes so it slides over the upper right tranny stud. Bolt one of the other holes to the flywheel using one of the pressure plate bolts. Now you have the tool for less than $10.
